Friendship Week

All the pupils from FS-Year 6 have enjoyed our Friendship Week. Watch this presentation to see some of the different things we have been doing.

Maths week

Here are some of the things that Years 1 – 6 have been working on during the last two days of our Maths Week.

Golden Time with Kapla

Kapla is the most amazing toy. Lots of us like to play with it in Golden Time. Look at what Raphael built!

Maths and data handling - sorting

Elin and Zodin are adding the spots on the dominoes and then sorting according to whether the total is odd or even.

Emma and James are sorting the Year 2A pupils according to four different criteria: blue top/red top and initial A-L/M-Z.

Poppies

In 2A we have been looking at some art work by Georgia O'Keeffe this week. The paintings we have seen are colourful, close-up paintings of flowers. One of her paintings in called 'Oriental Poppies'. 
This reminded us that we'd read about poppies in an information book about Remembrance Day. Also, we noticed some of the teachers were wearing poppies. 
On Friday Lauren's mum came into class and told us why she wears a poppy. Her father was a tank commander in the army. She told us a little bit about the First World War and the Second World War. She wears a poppy to remember and thank all the soldiers who fought in those wars, in other wars from the past and in wars still being fought today.
In our art lesson we made some poppy pictures. We used a new technique which involves using permanent ink on a plastic sheet then on the other side using oil pastels to add colour. Here are two photos of us working:

Science

We have just finished our forces topic. Our last experiment was to find out whether the surface affected how far the cars would roll. Working in twos we tested 7 different surfaces. Using a meter ruler we measured how far the car travelled each time. There were some crashes of course! We recorded our results directly onto our graphs. Most of us discovered that wood, which is a smooth surface, allowed the car to roll the furthest.

Problem solving with shape

We worked in pairs to make seven 3D shapes using multi-link cubes. We had a photo to copy and we had to concentrate to make sure our shapes were exactly like those in the photo. Once we had made all the pieces correctly the challenge was to fit them together to make a cube. After lots of trial and error some of us managed it!

Alien Art

We have been reading 'Bob the man on the Moon' by Simon Bartram. Bob doesn't notice the aliens on the moon - perhaps he's too busy! However, we spotted them lots of times in the pictures. When we used role-play to visit the Moon we saw even more. Here are the aliens that we caught a glimpse of!

Planning a celebration

The Entry Point to our IPC topic 'Time Travellers' was for the pupils to work together to plan an event. We chose to celebrate Roald Dahl's birthday - 13th September. The Year 2s brainstormed ideas, wrote down aims for the event and then planned out how to run the celebration. 

The event took place on Friday 12th September and we felt that we achieved our aim which was 'to have a fun afternoon to remember Roald Dahl, to learn more about him and to enjoy his books!'

Fantastic Mr Fox role-play

Our class mascots are called Harley and Monty.

Say hello to Monty and Harley! They love to learn new things. Don't forget they like to receive letters, postcards and pictures from the Year 2 children. They have their own blogs and go home with one child every weekend.
